A butterfly woman, about the meaning of the symbol

The first time I have come across such a tattoo was in Greece – I was sailing on a pirate ship from Zante to Kefalonia. The captain turned on atmospheric music, I felt like a conqueror, the wind ruffled my hair, the fresh sea breeze filled the entire chest, and I wanted to dance and enjoy the moment with my loved ones. The experience was all the more precious because the way back was not an easy one, with huge waves, in the orange glow of the setting sun, the water was pouring into the ship… I discovered that I do not have seasickness and even I am „very happy” and want more! Adventure! I actually want more! I am a Jack Sparrow (I love this character so much created by Johnny Depp, it’s a grandmaster! -> link to Youtube), I’m looking for treasure! I got carried away, but that’s how my imagination works… pardon. Ok, as people say… to the shore… 😉

On the way back, in the sunshine, a beautiful woman was sitting in front of me – with long black hair, wearing a white top, the Greek sun was heating mercilessly since dawn, and her tattoos immediately caught my attention. Art. A tiger, flowers, leaves, and next to that marvel on her shoulder – a butterfly woman with her eyes covered by wings. I was stunned. It matched her, nothing more nothing less. This woman had an aura, power and respect. I nodded approvingly and sketched a series of butterflies. I forgot about the pattern for a while, but the butterflies „stalked” me every now and then, they were everywhere. There are so many of them in my garden that I would love to put up a sign saying „attention, butterflies take precedence here!” 😉 For my birthday I got a medallion with a blue butterfly „this is the color of your eyes” as I heard and it made me feel nice. I have it with me all the time. Then… by some magic trick a book appeared in my hands – about the meaning of tattoo symbols, then Carl Jung „Man and his symbols”, more books with symbols, again butterflies, on a painting, on a box with a sushi. I visited a butterfly shop. In the end I ended up with a session with a monarch, but it’s not the end… it’s just the beginning. The vision is much broader 🙂

The meaning

The „I see you…” tattoo is not about just looking, but a deeper look. It’s a metaphorical „inner eye” that sees another person. It’s looking differently, inwardly, even mystically, and that’s why the butterfly with eyes is placed in the heart. It’s not about noticing, but observing. The phrase „I see you…” refers to a typical situation in which, instead of judging someone by how they look and based on the few moments you have had with that person, you nevertheless try to get to know them better. It may come to a situation where you „see through” to understand who this person is, what he does, what were the reasons for his actions, etc. In simpler terms, you don’t judge what you see in the first moment. This approach can create beautiful relationships for years, friendships, and even more.

This tattoo is contrary

In opposition to modernity. Butterfly wings have a deterrent function in nature, hence the design of my tattoo is a kind of shield, an expression of one’s inner beliefs, symbolically a woman’s eyes are closed. We are currently experiencing information hype – that is, an overload of information, overstimulation – with instant messaging, television, social media… in short: every day we get too much information that we can’t handle, because we can’t process such a huge amount of data, images, news.

A symbol of understanding the other person

It is really worthwhile to focus on the person and his soul – not on aesthetic issues and his number of likes on TikTok – and I think this is the plague of today’s times. The judging, the liking, the mass of filters on Instagram… sometimes I rub my eyes in amazement, especially seeing the younger generation of women, teenagers, who add not one, not two, but with 3 filters at once, on top of that several blur effects, they are perfect, even impossibly exaggerated like dolls. Well… I am a graphic designer, such things I catch immediately, photography is an art. I have been retouching photos for years, and what my eyes have seen in the press, media, and social media I will unfortunately never forget. I always follow one simple rule: natural or only with very delicate makeup. Light also preferably natural, daylight, or maybe a mysterious indigo night? A romantic pink sunset? Golden joyful morning glow at 6:00 in the morning? Such light then shows something real, emotion, not a selfie with a missing nose and a fuzzy cheek on a sweatshirt (oops! how many times have I seen that! I think it was about removing the scar… I always ask myself: why?). Personally, I retouch only the so-called „flecks on dresses”, creases of materials, but not freckles or wrinkles and scars, which in my opinion adorn a woman’s face, if they also agree with my opinion then cooperation begins. Scar – it’s your experience, value, knowledge, it’s your strength! You made it, you really made it! You are here, I see you, you are strong, really strong! This is how we should see scars. I dream of the beginning of a new trend, called directly „naturally”, but the world in this direction, unfortunately, is not going … but …. I am at least trying, and at this particular moment I will apply the so-called „butterfly effect” (in the sense: hoping for a positive result), when writing this article. Perhaps it will motivate or convince someone.

The butterfly symbol

The widely known symbolism of the butterfly itself means transformation. About the symbolism of the butterfly I will certainly write more than one article. I have collected a lot of interesting information, so now I will focus only on the most relevant points.

In Greek beliefs the butterfly meant „soul” (psyche), in Christianity you can also find this symbol. In painting, Jesus Christ often appears with a butterfly on his hand – it’s worth taking a walk to an art gallery, temple, church and again look at the paintings from this point of view. On the other hand, in the „The Book of Psychic Symbols: Interpreting Intuitive Messages” we can learn that the butterfly is associated with spirituality. It is a symbol of beauty, freedom, changes, transformations. It is also the beginning of a new path, maturity, inspiration.

Transformation – the life cycle of a butterfly

Before I go on to explain the symbolism of the butterfly woman, it is worth recalling the interesting phenomenon that is the life of a butterfly. Its cycle consists of 4 phases: the egg, the second is the larva (caterpillar), the third is the pupa, and the fourth is the adult butterfly (imago). The metamorphosis that a butterfly undergoes is a phenomenon, that’s why it is so inspiring. „It is a symbol of transformation, which transforms into something new and beautiful, like a butterfly from a caterpillar.”

Colors of the butterfly

The colors of the butterfly have significance in tattooing. I have prepared a small guideline, based on literature and articles:

• blue – hope, mystery, happiness.
• purple – abundance, progress, patience.
• yellow – prosperity, wealth.
• white – love in the sense of love of loved ones, family.
• red – passion, strength, romance.
• orange – optimism and happiness.
• black – symbol of transition, metamorphosis, rebirth, exploration.
• green – progress.

Itzpapalotl – Aztec goddess of fire and stars

In Aztec culture, there is mention of a goddess who took the form of a butterfly. The goddess of fire, stars, earth, agriculture, and… death. Reading about her has given me considerable shivers, but still she is worth mentioning. In Aztec art, she was presented as a butterfly, with the claws of a jaguar, but also as a dragon with butterfly or bat wings. She symbolized cyclical changes in nature, human fear, hope, and rebirth. I came across an explanation of the butterfly woman symbol in the book „THE LANGUAGE OF TATTOOS. Symbols and What They Mean” by Oliver Munden, Nick Schonberger.

It appears as early as the first chapter entitled „Love,” right next to cranes, cherubs, or rose symbolism. Notable sentences to read:

“Undoubtedly beautiful, compositions including a female head backed with butterfly wings gained popularity in the 1940s. From American Bert Grimm to the Englishman Rich Mingins (and more), the design is featured on extant flash sheets of the period and has been reborn and reworked by countless tattoo artists since that time.” *

And then:
“The design’s meaning relies on association with beauty, joy and eternal love”. *

Summary „I see you and understand you”

A butterfly woman, that is, a journey inside yourself, a transformation that makes you spread your wings and, most importantly, be able to see the other person, understand, love as he or she is, exactly as in the message from „The Little Prince.”

My „I see you…” as an annotation to a tattoo is to emphasize the beauty of existence, the fact that each of us humans is extraordinary, we just need to be able to look differently, with these „butterfly feelers” 😉

Kobieta motyl – o znaczeniu symbolu + wzór tatuażu

Pierwszy raz na taki tatuaż natrafiłam w Grecji – płynęłam pirackim statkiem z Zante do Kefalonii. Kapitan włączył klimatyczną muzykę, czułam się jak zdobywca, wiatr targał moje włosy, świeża bryza morska wypełniała całą klatkę, chciało się tańczyć i cieszyć chwilą z bliskimi. Przeżycie o tyle cenne, że droga powrotna nie należała do łatwych, z wielkimi falami, w pomarańczowym blasku zachodzącego słońca, woda wlewała się na statek… odkryłam, że nie mam choroby morskiej i nawet mnie to “bardzo cieszy” i chcę więcej! Przygoda! Ja chcę jeszcze raz! Jestem Jack Sparrow (jak ja kocham tą postać jaką wykreował Johnny Depp, arcymistrz! -> link do Youtube), szukam skarbu! Poniosło mnie, ale tak działa moja wyobraźnia… pardon. Ok, jak to mawiają do brzegu… 😉

W drodze powrotnej, w blasku słońca, siedziała przede mną ta piękna kobieta – z długimi czarnymi włosami, w białym topie, greckie słońce grzało niemiłosiernie od świtu, a jej tatuaże od razu przykuły moją uwagę. Sztuka. Tygrys, kwiaty, listki, a obok to cudo na ramieniu – kobieta-motyl z zakrytymi oczami przez skrzydła. Oniemiałam. Pasował do niej, nic dodać, nic ująć. Ta kobieta miała aurę, moc i respekt. Kiwałam głową z aprobatą i naszkicowałam serię motyli. Na jakiś czas zapomniałam o tym wzorze, ale motyle co chwilę mnie “prześladowały”, były wszędzie. W moim ogrodzie jest ich taaak dużo, że z chęcią postawię znak “uwaga, tu pierwszeństwo mają motyle!” 😉 na urodziny dostałam medalik z błękitnym motylem “to kolor twoich oczu” jak usłyszałam i zrobiło mi się miło. Mam go przy sobie cały czas. Potem… jakimś magicznym trikiem książka pojawiła się w moich rękach – o znaczeniu symboli tatuaży, następnie Carl Jung “Człowiek i jego symbole”, kolejne książki z symboliką, ponownie motyle, na obrazie, na pudełku z zamówieniem sushi, odwiedziłam motylarnię, w końcu skończyło się na sesji z monarchem, ale to nie koniec… to dopiero początek. Wizja jest o wiele szersza 🙂

Znaczenie

Tatuaż “I see you…” nie dotyczy klasycznego patrzenia, lecz głębszego spojrzenia. To metaforyczne ”wewnętrzne oko”, które widzi drugiego człowieka. To patrzenie inaczej, wewnętrznie, wręcz mistycznie, stąd umieszczenie motyla z oczami w sercu. Nie polega na spostrzeżeniu, ale obserwacji. Fraza “Widzę cię…” dotyczy typowej sytuacji, w której zamiast oceniać kogoś po tym jak wygląda i na bazie kilku chwil, które miałeś okazję z tą osobą przeżyć starasz się jednak poznać ją bliżej. Może dojść do sytuacji, w której “przejrzysz” na oczy i zrozumiesz kim jest ta osoba, co robi, jakie były powody jej działań itd. Prościej ujmując – nie oceniasz tego, co widzisz w pierwszej chwili. Takie podejście potrafi stworzyć piękne więzi na lata, przyjaźnie, a nawet i coś więcej.

To tatuaż przekorny

W opozycji do współczesności. Skrzydła motyla posiadają w naturze funkcję odstraszającą, stąd projekt mojego tatuażu stanowi swego rodzaju tarczę, wyraz swoich wewnętrznych przekonań, symbolicznie kobiece oczy są zamknięte. Obecnie doświadczamy szumu informacyjnego – czyli nadmiaru informacji, przebodźcowania – komunikatorami, telewizją, social mediami… w skrócie: codziennie dostajemy za dużo informacji, z którymi sobie nie radzimy, ponieważ nie jesteśmy w stanie przetworzyć tak ogromnej ilości danych, obrazów, newsów.

Symbol zrozumienia drugiego człowieka

Naprawdę warto jest skoncentrować się na człowieku i jego wnętrzu – nie na kwestiach estetycznych i jego liczbie lajków na TikToku – a uważam, że jest to plaga dzisiejszych czasów, ocenianie, lajkowanie, masa filtrów na Instagramie… czasami przecieram oczy ze zdumienia, szczególnie widząc młodsze pokolenie kobiet, nastolatek, które dodają nie jeden, nie dwa, a z 3 filtry na raz, do tego kilka efektów bluru (rozmycia), są idealne, wręcz niemożliwie przerysowane jak lalki. No cóż… jestem grafikiem, takie rzeczy wyłapuję od razu, fotografia to sztuka. Retuszowaniem zdjęć zajmuję się od lat, co moje oczy widziały w prasie, mediach i socialach to już nie-odzobaczą. Zawsze wyznaję jedną prostą zasadę: naturalnie a jak już to z delikatnym makijażem. Światło również najlepiej naturalne, dzienne, a może tajemnicze nocne indygo? Romantyczny różowy zachód słońca? Złote radosne poranne blaski o 6:00 nad ranem? Takie światło pokazuje wówczas coś prawdziwego, emocje, a nie selfie z brakiem nosa i rozmytym policzkiem na bluzie (ups! ile razy to widziałam! Chyba chodziło o usunięcie blizny… ja się zawsze pytam: dlaczego?). Osobiście retuszuję tylko tzw. “paprochy na sukienkach”, zagniecenia materiałów, ale nie piegi czy zmarszczki i blizny, które według mnie zdobią twarz kobiety, jeśli one również zgadzają się z moim zdaniem to wtedy rozpoczyna się współpraca. Blizna – to twoje przeżycie, wartość, wiedza, to twoja siła! Dałaś, dałeś radę! Jesteś tu, widzę cię, jesteś silna, silny! Tak powinniśmy widzieć blizny. Marzę o tym, żeby rozpoczął się nowy trend, nazwany wprost “naturalnie”, ale świat w tym kierunku niestety nie zmierza… ale. Ja próbuję i właśnie w tym momencie zastosuję tzw. “efekt motyla” (w rozumieniu: licząc na pozytywny skutek), pisząc ten artykuł. Może kogoś zmotywuje, przekona.

Symbol motyla

Sama symbolika motyla oznacza przemianę, transformację. O symbolice motyla na pewno napiszę niejeden artykuł, zebrałam sporo ciekawych informacji, dlatego teraz skoncentruję się jedynie na najistotniejszych kwestiach.

W greckich wierzeniach motyl oznaczał “duszę” (psyche), w chrześcijaństwie również można spotkać ten symbol. W malarstwie Jezus Chrystus często pojawia się z motylem na ręku – warto przejść się do galerii sztuki, świątyni, kościoła i ponownie spojrzeć na obrazy pod tym kątem.

Natomiast w “Księdze symboli intuicyjnych” możemy dowiedzieć się, że motyl związany jest z duchowością. Jest symbolem piękna, wolności, zmian, przeobrażeń, tzw. transformacji. To także początek nowej drogi, dojrzałości, natchnienia.

Przeistoczenie – cykl życia motyla

Zanim przejdę do wyjaśnienia symboliki kobiety-motyla warto przypomnieć ciekawe zjawisko jakim jest życie motyla. Jego cykl składa się z 4 faz: jajo, drugi to larwa (gąsienica), trzeci to poczwarka, a czwarty to motyl dorosły (imago). Metamorfoza jaką przechodzi motyl jest fenomenem, dlatego jest to tak inspirujące. “Jest symbolem przemian, które przeistaczają się w coś nowego i pięknego, niczym motyl z gąsienicy”. Zachęcam również do obejrzenia krótkiego i pięknego filmu “Butterfly: A Life | National Geographic”.

Kolory motyla

Kolory motyla mają znaczenie w tatuażu. Przygotowałam małą ściągę, opierając się na literaturze i artykułach:

• niebieski – nadzieja, tajemnica, szczęście.
• fioletowy – obfitość, postęp, cierpliwość.
• żółty – dobrobyt, bogactwo.
• biały – miłość w rozumieniu miłość bliskich, rodziny.
• czerwony – pasja, siła, romans.
• pomarańczowy – optymizm i szczęście.
• czarny – symbol przejścia, metamorfozy, odrodzenia, poszukiwań.
• zielony – postęp.

Itzpapalotl – aztecka bogini ognia i gwiazd

W kulturze azteckiej można znaleźć wzmiankę o bogini, która przybierała postać motyla. Bogini ognia, gwiazd, ziemi, rolnictwa i… śmierci. Czytanie o niej przyprawiało mnie o niemałe ciarki, ale warto o niej wspomnieć. W azteckiej sztuce przedstawiano ją jako motyla, z pazurami jaguara, ale także jako smoka ze skrzydłami motyla lub nietoperza. Symbolizowała cykliczne zmiany w naturze, ludzki strach, nadzieję, odrodzenie. Więcej o niej możecie przeczytać tutaj. Zajęłam się dalszymi badaniami symboliki kobiety-motyla i znalazłam ciekawą lekturę.

Symbol kobiety – motyla

Na wyjaśnienie symbolu kobiety-motyla natrafiłam w książce „THE LANGUAGE OF TATTOOS. Symbols and What They Mean” Oliver Munden, Nick Schonberger.

Pojawia się już w pierwszym rozdziale zatytułowanym „Miłość”, tuż obok żurawi, cherubina, czy symboliki róży. Jak możemy przeczytać:

“Niewątpliwie piękne kompozycje z kobiecą głową podpartą skrzydłami motyla zyskały popularność w latach 40. XX wieku. Od Amerykanina Berta Grimma po Anglika Richa Minginsa (i nie tylko), projekt ten pojawia się na zachowanych kartach z tego okresu i od tego czasu został odrodzony i przerobiony przez niezliczonych artystów tatuażu.” *

I następnie:
“Znaczenie projektu opiera się na skojarzeniach z pięknem, radością i wieczną miłością, ale także jako wyznanie osobistej, często wewnętrznej podróży”. *

Podsumowanie, czyli “Widzę cię i rozumiem”

Kobieta-motyl, czyli podróż wewnątrz siebie, przemiana, która sprawia, że rozwijasz skrzydła i co najważniejsze potrafisz dostrzec drugiego człowieka, zrozumieć, pokochać takim jakim jest, dokładnie jak w przesłaniu z “Małego Księcia”:

“.. oczy są ślepe. Szukać należy sercem” Antoine de Saint-Exupery, „Mały Książę”, rozdział XXV

Moje “I see you…” („widzę Cię”) dopowiedziane do tatuażu to podkreślenie piękna istnienia, tego, że każdy z nas, ludzi, jest niezwykły, trzeba tylko umieć spojrzeć inaczej, tymi „czułkami motyla” 😉

Teraz, gdy za każdym razem napiszę “Coś zobaczyłam…” będziesz już wiedzieć – ktoś lub coś mnie zainspirowało, dało “to naturalne światło”, którego poszukuję. Czasami czuję się jak na wyprawie w słynnej legendzie z kwiatem paproci, niby nie istnieje… ale właśnie to “niby” robi wielką różnicę. Cuda jednak się zdarzają…
